Abstract

Background:

Diabetes mellitus is the leading risk factor for impaired kidney function, a chronic metabolic disorder that can lead to various vascular complications. The study aims to determine the prevalence and individual factors contributing to elevated creatinine levels among diabetic individuals.

 

Methodology:

 A retrospective study. Data were extracted from the patients’ medical records or laboratory management system (LMS) of the study site. Every patient from the records was assigned a unique laboratory number for identification, recorded on the data collection form, which captured creatinine levels, age, sex, and race among diabetic individuals attending Entebbe Regional Referral Hospital diabetic clinic.

 

Results:

The prevalence of hypercreatinemia was found to be 18.75%. The prevalence of hypercreatinemia was high among those with a family history of CVD, 4(44.4%). Most respondents, 48(59.9%), were aged 50 and above; most of the participants were females, 46(57.5%). Respondents with a BMI of >30.0kg/m2 (obese) had the highest number with elevated creatinine levels, 6(40.0%). Respondents who took alcohol had a higher prevalence at 27.0% than non-alcohol takers. Daily alcohol consumers had the highest percentage with hypercreatinemia, 8(80.0%). Monthly consumers had 3(42.9%) and weekly 2(50.0%). Smokers had a higher hypercreatinemia prevalence, 5(20.8%), with daily smokers having the highest. 64(80.0%) did not have other conditions other than diabetes.  11(68.7%) had hypertension while least number 2(12.5%) had kidney disease and 3(18.8%) had heart disease.                                                                                   

 

Conclusion:

Hypercreatinemia remains a concern among diabetic patients, highlighting the need for routine renal monitoring, early risk identification, and targeted lifestyle interventions to prevent kidney dysfunction.

 

Recommendation:

The government and the hospital should invest in research and health systems at ERRH to identify the relationship between DM and age as a way of curbing this increased rate of diabetes.
